Green Valley Ranch is perfect for people who are coming to Las Vegas but don't want to be immersed in the city's round-the-clock vibe. Located about 20 minutes away in Henderson, just off the I-215 at Green Valley Parkway, this elegant resort provides a retreat far from the crowds -- yet it's still close to the Strip as well as in the vicinity of several golf courses, cultural attractions and wonderful shopping opportunities.Green Valley Ranch is like an oasis in the desert. The resort sits on eight acres with lush landscaping. Its lobby has an elegant ambiance akin to European manor houses of centuries past. The 490 rooms and suites are located in an eight-floor tower that is removed from the busy casino for peace and quiet. All of the accommodations are sophisticated in style and atmosphere. Amenities include down comforters, coffeemakers, multiline speaker telephones, plush robes, separate showers and bathtubs, private bars and complimentary daily newspapers. Concierge service and 24-hour in-room dining are also available. The hotel tower at Green Valley Ranch is situated by the stunning pools. One pool and Jacuzzi are for all guests to use. Other areas -- called The Pond and The Backyard, which has an incredible sand bottom -- are for VIPs and special events. Plus, this breathtaking outdoor deck features private cabanas, a poolside café and a Mediterranean-style lounge. Concerts and pool parties are often held in the spring and summer months.Certainly a highlight of the resort is the variety of dining options. Expect the finest in gastronomy at Hank's, a steakhouse known for its impeccable service and high-quality prime cuts of beef. Another favorite among guests is Tides Oyster Bar, where the seafood is fresh and served with New Orleans spirit. For more casual meals, stop by the Feast Buffet or the Grand Café, which is open 24 hours. Green Valley Ranch also has a fabulous selection of fast food outlets in a charming food court. As part of a $20 million investment project, several new eateries will debut at the resort by spring 2015. This includes Mercadito by the Sandoval brothers of Chicago. Among the Mexican restaurant's highlights will be tacos created with homemade corn masa tortillas, ceviches, guacamoles, salsas and, of course, some unforgettable margaritas. Tony Gemignani, an 11-time World Pizza Champion, is bringing a second location of his popular Pizza Rock restaurant to Green Valley Ranch. He'll also operate a more casual venue called Slice House by Tony Gemignani. Tippling Hall will be devoted to all things alcohol. This spirited joint will feature everything from unique kegged cocktails, wines and brews to a menu of globally inspired comfort food.If you're not relaxed from all the food and sunbathing, then a visit to The Spa at Green Valley Ranch is a requirement. The facility is equipped with an indoor lap pool, a steam room and a gym. It offers a delightful menu of massages and body treatments -- like the Watermelon Sugar Scrub, an exfoliating treatment that's sure to leave you feeling refreshed!  Guests looking to add some energy and volume to their evenings will discover lots to drink in the chic Drop Bar. There's also a 10-screen Regal Cinemas on the premises. For gamblers, Green Valley Ranch is home to a 16-seat live keno lounge, an action-packed race and sports book, more than 55 table games and 2,200 slot and video poker machines. There is also a 22-table poker room and a 400-seat bingo hall. For shoppers, The District at Green Valley Ranch, an outdoor, urban-style retail and dining complex, is just a few steps away.  Since Green Valley Ranch is off the beaten path, the resort provides a complimentary shuttle to guests. Service is offered to and from McCarran International Airport as well as Mandalay Bay on the Strip. So when you want to avoid the hustle and bustle in Las Vegas, Green Valley Ranch will be your haven away from it all.-- By Renée LiButti

The Golden Nugget, which is located in the heart of downtown, feels like a property you'd find on the Strip. Even though it's got a long history, nothing about it is dated. The Golden Nugget is a dynamic resort with a hip attitude and doors that open out onto all the excitement of Fremont Street.  Guests will be right at home in any of the stylish rooms in the hotel's four towers. But it's the Golden Nugget's Rush Tower that has raised the bar on accommodations in downtown with its sophisticated and spacious suites. Boasting a contemporary design that reflects the vibrant scene just steps away, these suites provide every luxury imaginable. This includes pillow-top mattresses, feather down comforters, 42-inch plasma TVs and stunning views of downtown and the Strip's skyline. If you're looking for entertainment, the resort's showroom is stocked with star power. Impressionist Gordie Brown brings nearly a hundred celebs -- from icons like Elvis and Michael Jackson to Aaron Neville and Sylvester Stallone -- to life onstage. Of course, there is always live music and free Viva Vision sound and light shows to enjoy as part of the popular Fremont Street Experience attraction. The Golden Nugget's pool, dubbed The Tank, is an attraction in its own right. Guests will feel like they're at a water park when careening down a three-story, enclosed slide that goes through an aquarium filled with sharks. Plus, there's a luxurious oasis all around -- complete with daybeds and cabanas so you can soak up the sun and have some privacy at the same time. Drinks are always available at the H2O Bar. Another two-level, infinity-edge pool, called The Hideout, can be accessed from the third floor of The Tank. It's for adults only.   If aquariums are your thing, be sure to have a meal in the Chart House restaurant. Its bar wraps around a 75,000-gallon tropical aquarium filled with more than 1,000 colorful fish. In addition to the freshest seafood imaginable, you'll love the juicy steaks. Aficionados of Far East delights will have trouble choosing between Lillie's Asian Cuisine and Red Sushi. Go to the Grotto for a menu packed with Italian classics and a delightfully bright and open setting. Claim Jumper serves hearty portions of classic American food like burgers, sandwiches and ribs. Cadillac Mexican Cantina & Tequila Bar is the perfect place to get your south-of-the-border favorites like tacos and enchiladas, and it has a selection of more than 70 boutique tequilas. And it would be hard to find a more elegant steakhouse in Las Vegas than Vic & Anthony's with its dark wood paneling, dim lighting and leather-backed chairs. For something quick and easy, simply line up for The Buffet.Looking for a place to party? On the resort's second floor, the balcony at Gold Diggers reigns as Fremont Street Experience's most exclusive lookout point. When you step inside, there's a great bar as well as music from yesterday and today for dancing. Downstairs, the Rush Lounge is the hippest spot to sip signature cocktails while mixing and mingling, or you can order one of 40 different brews from the International Beer Bar. There is also Bar 46, an oval-shaped bar with a table games area that spills out onto Fremont Street.Be pampered in the stylish Spa and Salon, a sprawling full-service facility that includes a fitness center, sauna, whirlpool and steam room. Try one of their specially themed packages, like Las Vegas Lights (to prep for an evening out) or Quick Fix (for the morning after!).The Golden Nugget also has plenty of casino action including a poker room, a four-table baccarat pit and a stylish, country club-like sports book. There are several fine shops, ranging from d'Oro for jewelry and watches to The Chocolate Box for sweet treats. Plus, you can check out the largest gold nugget in the world on public display and even buy a gold bar from the Gold to Go ATM.Whether you're visiting Las Vegas on business, for a romantic getaway or with your family and friends, the Golden Nugget has the perfect accommodations ready and waiting for you, as well as the key to downtown.-- By Renée LiButti

Very comfortable, wonderful city view, close proximity, attentive staff, wonderful pool.

Starting with making the reservations: Our agent was extremely helpful, and very nice. She was well versed in her knowledge of Las Vegas, and did provide a room we described to a "T." Check in was efficient and the person who waited on us did everything to make sure our room was perfect for us. The food in the Cafe was very good and we enjoyed an unhurried meal with courteous wait staff.
So in a word, "we could not have been more satified with service from beginning to check out.

Are your pools heated?

Yes, year round heating! Very refreshing, and they also have a very nice hot tub by the fireplaces.
